Tanya talks about her struggle for a normal life!

That's what the headline says on the cover of the November 1972 issue of TV Star Parade

According to the article, written by Ann Bruce, it's really all about getting away from the hassle and stress of work for some relaxin' and recreation, something we all can relate to.

TV Movie Screen - September 1968: Welk's New Family

It's time once again to visit the archives for another scoop Welk story from those celebrity fan magazines of yesteryear!

Today, it's the issue of TV Movie Screen from September 1968

In this issue, we read about the new champagne kids on the block, Sandi & Sally, Lynn Anderson, Andra Willis, Tanya and Larry Welk and their upcoming marriage plus there's a scoop on the Lennon Sisters as well.

As you can tell, the headlines are usually exaggerated. A common trait amongst magazines of that kind in those days.

So what is that love mistake?

Once again, here's another piece of that American Pop Culture history that is Lawrence Welk's Musical Family on the cover plus written articles from those vintage celebrity fan magazines.

This one is TV Star Parade from March 1973, Sally Flynn is featured....

The article inside talks about Sally's departure from the Welk Show. Written by Suzie Fox, it mentions that her decision to leave the Music Makers is to pursue a dramatic acting career in New York, which I assume it's Broadway.

As always, you can click on the pictures to read the whole story!

We've Got the (Tiger) Beat

Last year, I posted on this blog fake covers of Lawrence Welk and his Music Makers on Dynamite Magazine as examples of how they can attract the young viewers.

You can view my creations here and here.

Yesterday, my fertile mind was at work again, and thanks to the efforts of Photoshop, I made fake covers of the Musical Family if they appeared on Tiger Beat Magazine, the popular publication of pop idols aimed to the teen market.

I think you'll like the results....

Pop Culture Lessons - Musical Family Magazine Covers

As you may or may not know, I have a nice collection of vintage celebrity fan magazines.

And 99.9 three fifths of them have Lawrence Welk and or members of his Musical Family on the cover.

They provide a look back at the Hollywood celebrity gossip in the pre-TMZ, pre-ET days, long before the internet and blogs were invented. Like today, many of the stories were either embellished or just plain made up.

So don't take any of these too seriously, it's kinda like a pop culture history lesson that is so cheesy you might want to put it on a Ritz cracker.

Or just have a chuckle or two....starting with this cover of the August 1972 TV Star Parade

It's a very nice informal picture of Cissy, Tanya, Lawrence and Mary Lou. I like that fact that Cissy is shown wearing glasses, which I can relate to (I wear glasses).

On another note, I hope those rumors about Jim Nabors have been put to rest.

Here's the cover of Photoplay magazine from March 1969

The title may be exaggerated, but it talks about the trials and tribulations concerning love and relationships amongst the Musical Family that have been cultivated on the show.

But I think some of you are kinda curious about Chuck Heston's nude love scene....

The next two are from TV Picture Life, starting with the March 1970 cover....

Turns out the secret was that even though the Maestro was already a grandpa, this was the first grandchild to carry the Welk name and legacy. (Lawrence Welk the Third)

And the Lennon Sisters never did split by the way....so you Lennon fans can relax.

Finally, this next TV Picture Life from July 1970 also trumpets the arrival of a Musical Family kid....

Actually, the article mentions that 95 percent of pregnancies are normal resulting with a perfectly healthy baby....Sandi's was one of them in the 95% range.

By the way, it's a girl. That is little Jenni Griffiths with Lawrence, Papa Brent and Mama Sandi.

And why oh why would Hollywood give Glen Campbell the cold shoulder?

A Dynamite way to attract the young fans

Remember growing up in the 70s and 80s with Dynamite magazine?

Every school kid anticipated each new issue every month, on their cover featured stars of the hottest TV shows, movies and music of the era.

And that lead me to thinking....what would it be like if Lawrence Welk and his Musical Family were featured on the cover of Dynamite?

That led to another landmark in Photoshopping, and the result was this.

Now that's....to quote Jimmie "J.J" Walker....is DY-NO-MITE!

The date was June 16, 1973; music makers Mary Lou Metzger and Richard Maloof got married.

And this is the right time to go into my vault of vintage fan magazines to share this gem from that September's TV Star Parade.

Silver Screen from June 1970

This is just one of the many reasons why ebay rules....

This issue of Silver Screen magazine from June of '70 is one of many famous celebrity magazines from the late 60's and early 70's that featured many "stories" about Lawrence Welk and his Music Makers.

In this issue, the female performers are featured.

The girls mentioned in the article, written by Alice Davenport, are Sandi Griffiths, Sally Flynn, Charlotte Harris, Gail Farrell, Ralna English, Cissy King and Norma Zimmer. And as the cover suggests, it talks about the loves and the sacrifices the ladies have to make as members of the Musical Family.

These are the actual pictures from this issue that I scanned and posted...

Also this issue has scoop photos of Tanya and her newborn son, Lawrence Welk the Third....who was born on February 28th of the same year. It also features a related article written by Gary Denton.

These are the pictures....

It's always very nice to go down memory lane.
